Tevta providing training to prisoners

The Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (Tevta) is offering vocational training in 15 demand driven short courses to prisoners. 

The Tevta will request the Punjab government to reduce to some extent the sentence period of the prisoners who have completed their vocational training.

Tevta Chairperson Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said this while talking to Inspector General of Prisons Mian Farooq Nazeer.

The Tevta chairperson said funds would be allocated to establish new technical training centres in jails. He said at present 1,100 prisoners had been imparted vocational training in the first phase. 

More than 1,500 prisoners are being trained in demand-driven vocational training in 15 jails in the second phase., he added.

Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that the prisoners; male, female and juvenile, were being given vocational training.  The courses include home appliances repair, electrician, wood work/carpenter, beautician, domestic tailoring, welder, plumber, motorcycle mechanic, tractor mechanic, machine embroidery, computer applications, motor winding, fashion designing, hand embroidery and industrial stitching.

The objective of imparting the training to the inmates is to make them useful citizens of society. The Tevta chairperson said that labs had been established in the jails.

This training is being conducted according to the vision of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, he said.

arrested: Punjab Highway Patrol claimed to have arrested 19 criminals, including 10 proclaimed offenders (POs). 

PHP teams arrested 10 POs, identified as M Khalid, M Akbar, Shahid Iqbal, M Nasir, Adil, Yasir, Zubair, Abbas, M Hashim and Farzand. Police arrested nine accused named Iqrar Hussain, M Zubair, Hazoor Bakhsh, Qadeer, Shahid Ali, Mumtaz Ahamd, Ismail, Akbar Ali and Safdar Hussain and seized 61 litre liquor and illegal arms.
