Mukhtaran Mai to appear in fashion week

LAHORE: Mukhtaran Mai, a gang-rape survivor and an icon of women empowerment in Pakistan, will walk the ramp for Pakistani designer Rozina Munib at Fashion Pakistan Week 2016.  According to media reports, Mukhtaran Mai appearance in the event is aimed at creating awareness about women empowerment in Pakistan.

 

PBA office-bearers elected

LAHORE: Mian Amir Mehmood, chief executive officer of Dunya Media Group, was elected as chairman of Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) Monday.  This was announced in a meeting of the PBA that was convened to appoint office-bearers within the association. Mir Ibrahim Rahman, chief executive officer of Geo TV, has been elected as vice chairman while Duraid Qureshi, CEO of HUM Network, appointed as senior vice president of Pakistan Broadcasters Association. Shakeel Masud, CEO of Dawn News (TV), has been elected as secretary of the association. It was also announced in the meeting that Muhammad Aslam Kazi of KTN Group and K. Arshad Zuberi of AAJ TV would serve as joint secretary and finance secretary of PBA respectively. 

Pilot suspended for midair vulgarity

LONDON: A British Airways pilot has been suspended after allegedly taking lewd photos of himself wearing stockings in the cockpit of the plane while flying. A series of sordid photos, including one which shows the pilot exposing himself in a cabin toilet, were obtained by The Sun and shared with BA officials. In the background of some of the photos, explicit material is strewn around the cockpit including the aircraft’s controls. BA has suspended the accused, pilot Captain Colin Glover, who denies he is the subject of the pictures.

 

JAMRUD: The security forces killed a suspected militant in Ghundi area here on Monday, official sources said. The sources said that Noor Muhammad known as Noorai allegedly opened fire on the security forces in Makkikhel area. The forces also returned the fire and killed him. The sources said that two hand-grenades and other weapons were recovered from the militant.

 

Line-2 of Cherat Cement starts production

PESHAWAR: The second unit of Cherat Cement Factory - Line 2 - with the production capacity of 4,500 metric tonnes cement per day formally started production on Monday. The first unit of the factory has been operational in the province since 1985. The production capacity of the first unit is 3,200 metric tonnes per day. The construction of the second unit was started in 2014 and completed within a short span of just two years, said a senior manager of the factory, while talking to The News. He said that over 1,000 people have been employed in both the units of the factory. Some of the departments like store, administration, accounts and purchases were combined and the officials there were taking care of both the units, he explained.

 

LPG price increases by Rs10 per kg

LAHORE: Following hike of LPG price in international market, marketing companies without any notification of Ogra have increased price of LPG by Rs10/kg, leading to Rs100/kg rise in cost of fuel for domestic cylinder and Rs 400 for commercial cylinder.According to Irfan Khokhar, Chairman LPG Distributors Association, the government officials have started raiding LPG distributors on price hike and other issues. He alleged that the government employees, especially police are asking for bribe from the LPG sellers on daily basis. Civil defence and other staff are also creating hurdles in selling of LPG, he added.

 

Seven POs arrested in Lower Dir

TIMERGARA: The police in Lower Dir district on Monday claimed to have arrested seven proclaimed offenders (POs) wanted by the police in various cases. Speaking at a press conference at Timergara Police Station, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Fakhre Alam, Station House Officer of the  Khall Police Station Abdul Rehman, SHO Timergara Police Station Bakhtiar Khan, investigation officers Zahid Rehman Khan and Sher Muhammad Khan said police had arrested seven proclaimed offenders from various areas of Lower Dir. Two Kalashnikovs and one pistol were recovered from their possession.

 

Minister lauds seminaries role

MANSEHRA: Federal Minister for Haj and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Mohammad Yusuf has lauded the role of seminaries in spreading the Islamic teachings. “Seminaries have been propagating the message of Islam and Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in our country. “But I will also suggest to them to include contemporary education in curricula,” the minister told a gathering held in connection with the groundbreaking of Madrassa Wal Quran in Sari Gagorri area of Konsh valley.

 

Suicide bomber kills four in Jalalabad

KABUL: A suicide attack rattled eastern Jalalabad city, the capital of Nangarhar province, 120km east of Kabul, on Monday killing four people and injuring five others, a spokesman for the provincial government, Attaullah Khogiani, said.

The deadly attack took place in Khalis township, a residential area, where a meeting of elders was underway at 1.30pm local time, leaving four civilians and the attacker dead and injuring five more civilians, Khogiani told reporters here.

Without providing more details the official added that investigation has been initiated into the incident. Meantime, an official on the condition of anonymity said that the attack had claimed 12 lives. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.-
