1,000 females imparted journalism training under ‘Educate a Girl’ programme

‘Educate a Girl’ celebrated the completion of a fully-funded vocational course for 1,000 deserving girls in Karachi who were imparted journalism training and assisted in finding jobs so they may achieve sustainability and, eventually, be donors themselves. 

The celebration was hosted by Lincoln’s Corner, Pakistan American Cultural Centre

(PACC) and noted speakers were sculptor Amin Gulgee, designer Deepak Perwani, news anchor Nadia Naqi, PPI Karachi Bureau Chief Imran Zakir, grooming expert Khadija Chagani of Pivot Point, Honorary Consul General of Finland Sadia Khan,fashion journalist Zurain Imam, news anchor Sana Hashmi and Jaweria Ali. 

“We are very humbled and excited by this important milestone and especially by the impact,” said ‘Educate a Girl’ President Tara Uzra Dawood.  “Three girls have become news anchors, several girls have newspaper columns, some now work at TV channels, and eight girls have, today, funded the scholarship of other girls out of their first ever paycheck,” she said. 

“Educate a Girl winner Jaweria Ali has funded two scholarships including Ghanwa Akram, our 1,000th winner. We look forward to beginning our journey to educate 1,000 deserving girls in Lahore.”

Eminent fashion designer, Deepak Perwani, said, “I’m an ardent supporter, donor and trainer for this exceptional programme. It has been an honour working for women empowerment and I would like to invite everyone to join us in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.”

To date, ‘Educate a Girl’ has impacted the lives of 1,300 girls in Karachi, Pakistan and Lagos, Nigeria.  In the next phase, the programme would be extended to Lahore, Islamabad and Quetta.
