Rights of women guaranteed in Constitution, says Rabbani
QAU conference inaugurated
ISLAMABAD: The Centre of Excellence in Gender Studies, Quaid-i-Azam University, inaugurated its international conference “Gender Knowledge in Pakistan: Production, Dissemination and Contestation” on Wednesday at the HEC Auditorium.
Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani also attended the inauguration ceremony. He elaborated upon the rights of women guaranteed in the Constitution of Pakistan. The Senate chairman also underscored the role of political parties and civil society in continuing the fight for upholding the rights of the marginalised. Vice Chancellor Quaid-i-Azam University celebrated the status of Quaid-i-Azam University as the leading university in Pakistan.
Director Gender Studies Department of Quaid-i-Azam University Dr Farzana Bari brought to the fore the challenges faced by women in Pakistan and the importance of such conferences in bringing women from all over the world together in their struggle for the rights of women.
The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Dr Nivedita Menon from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. She gave a powerful speech that questioned the homogeneity of the category ‘woman’ and called for the recognition of potentially destabilising trends in advancing the cause women.
