Climate Change Ministry working on making urban growth sustainable
Islamabad: The Ministry of Climate Change is working on an initiative with the help of UN-Habitat on making urban growth sustainable by promoting consumption and production sustainable and environmental-friendly.
Spokesman of the Climate Change Ministry Muhammad Saleem said Pakistan is a resource rich country with low consumption rates on a per capita basis. However, receiving environments are stressed and the impacts of climate change call for resilient systems of consumption and production.
“The policy decisions to be taken by the ministry in the coming days would shape the future relationship between natural resource use and social goals,” he saidHe said the ministry would implement 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production to efficiently use natural resources, encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and ensure awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.
Saleem said the upcoming initiatives would help strengthen scientific and technological capacity to move towards sustainable consumption and production; and develop and implement tools for sustainable tourism and rationalize inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies.
