Dar Academy’s Sufyan shines in Pakistan’s sweep of Bangladesh
LAHORE: Pakistan’s hockey revival gained momentum in Dhaka as the national team swept Bangladesh in a three match play off series, securing their place in the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup qualifiers.
The series was arranged after Pakistan’s withdrawal from the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup in India due to security concerns, which had initially ruled them out of direct qualification. The FIH treated the withdrawal as a force majeure, granting Pakistan a lifeline through this special play off.
At the Maulana Bhashani Stadium, Pakistan dominated all three encounters, winning convincingly and showcasing depth across their squad. The standout performer was Sufyan of Dar Hockey Academy, who emerged as the top scorer of the series, underlining the academy’s growing reputation as a cradle of young talent. His sharp finishing and consistency provided Pakistan with the cutting edge against Bangladesh’s defence.
Bangladesh, who had finished sixth at the Asia Cup, struggled to match Pakistan’s pace and tactical discipline. Despite spirited spells, they were unable to prevent Pakistan from asserting control in each match. For Pakistan, the victories not only secure progression but also restore confidence after the setback of missing the Asia Cup.
