Under 27th Amendment, SJC, JCP, SC procedure panel revamped

ISLAMABAD: The major constitutional and statutory bodies — the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) and Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Committee have been reconstituted in accordance with the revised constitutional framework.

The three top constitutional bodies have been reconstituted in pursuance of the 27th Constitutional Amendment under which the Federal Constitutional Court has also been established that has started hearing cases related to constitutional matters.

In line with the principles of transparency and institutional continuity, the following nominations have been made:

Supreme Judicial Council: Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, being the next most senior judge of the Supreme Court, has jointly been nominated as an SJC member by the Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan under Clause 2(d) of Article 209 of the Constitution.

Judicial Commission of Pakistan: Justice Aamer Farooq, the next most senior judge of the Federal Constitutional Court, has jointly been nominated as a JCP member by the Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chief Justice of Federal Constitutional Court under Clause 2 (iiia) of Article 175A of the Constitution. Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Committee: The Chief Justice of Pakistan nominated Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail as a member of the committee constituted under Section 2 of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act, 2023.

“The reconstituted bodies will continue to play a central role in matters of accountability, judicial appointments and procedural governance under the amended constitutional scheme,” says a press release issued here on Tuesday.
