Rawalpindi crowd showers Sri Lanka with gratitude
RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Stadium turned into a vibrant sea of colour and emotion on Friday as Sri Lankan flags pasted on placards astonishingly outnumbered those of the home team.
In a rare and heartwarming display, Pakistani fans expressed their gratitude to the Sri Lankan players and board for their decision to stay back and complete their international commitments in Pakistan.
As the stands began to fill well ahead of the second one-dayer, hundreds of Sri Lankan flags fluttered proudly in the winter breeze. According to estimates, well over 3,000 flags and placards in Sri Lankan colours were distributed among the spectators.
“I specifically asked for a Sri Lankan flag,” said Nasir Hasan, a resident who lives across the road from the stadium. “This was my way of thanking their players for rejecting outside temptations and standing by Pakistan. Everyone knows who was pulling the strings of some contracted IPL players. But the Sri Lankans rejected lucrative offers and chose honour over money. We are grateful for their gesture.”
Youngsters and local club cricketers echoed the sentiment. “Today is special,” said local cricketer Asif Mehmood, waving a Sri Lankan flag alongside a Pakistan one. “We always back Pakistan, but today we also applaud every good shot, whether it comes off a Pakistan or Sri Lanka bat. Cricket deserves this spirit. May the best team win.”
By the time the first ball was bowled, the stadium was close to capacity. The atmosphere swelled further as Pakistan, batting second, mounted their chase of a stiff target. Fans remained glued to their seats, eagerly awaiting fireworks from Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman and company. And when the tension peaked, the stadium lit up with thousands of cell phone lights, transforming the venue into a glowing spectacle.
Security remained tight throughout the evening, with spectators passing through several screening layers. But the meticulous arrangements did little to dampen the festive spirit inside, where fans from both sides celebrated cricket, camaraderie, and the enduring bond between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
