Pakistan, UK vow enhanced security cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday met with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) Director General Graeme Biggar here to discuss enhanced bilateral cooperation across various security and law enforcement domains.

The meeting, which included British High Commissioner Jane Marriott and several Pakistani officials such as the Nacta national coordinator, NCCIA and National Forensic Agency DGs, centred on expanding joint efforts in several critical areas, including counter-terrorism, narcotics control, human trafficking, forensics and police training and immigration.

Both sides formally agreed to strengthen mutual collaboration on training courses for officers from anti-narcotics and other agencies, including NCCIA. A specific focus was placed on increasing coordination and joint efforts to curb online child harassment. A significant outcome of the meeting was the agreement to increase bilateral cooperation regarding extradition matters. Minister Naqvi confirmed that five MoUs between Pakistan and the UK—covering extradition and other sectors— are nearing finalisation and are expected to be signed soon. Graeme Biggar condemned a recent suicide attack in Islamabad and expressed sorrow over the loss of lives. The interior minister used the opportunity to reinforce Pakistan’s resolute stance against militancy, stating, “All roots of terrorism trace back to the neighbouring country.” He added that “The world cannot match Pakistan’s determination and resilience in the fight against terrorism.” Naqvi also emphasized the role of technology in bolstering law enforcement, noting, “Modern forensic tools and training can further enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies.” Furthermore, he mentioned that effective, collaborative measures are being taken with the UK to address illegal immigration. Graeme Biggar reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to cooperation and praised Pakistan’s efforts in combating narcotics trafficking. Towards the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Naqvi paid a strong tribute to the Pakistan Army for its swift and professional response in foiling a recent terrorist attack on Cadet College Wana and safely rescuing all students and teachers. “I congratulate the operational commander and the entire team of the Pakistan Army for their timely and successful operation,” said Naqvi, highlighting the army’s professional competence in eliminating the attackers. “The courageous soldiers who protected the students and teachers are the true heroes of the nation,” he concluded.
