PIA engineers’ protest disrupts flights nationwide
LAHORE: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) engineers’ protest continued for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, resulting in significant flight disruptions across the country.
The strike, led by the Aircraft Engineers’ Association, caused the cancellation of seven flights and delays in 39 others, leaving passengers stranded at airports nationwide. The protest stems from unpaid salary increments, alleged administrative pressure, and concerns over working conditions.
The association’s president stated that engineers had grown increasingly frustrated with the PIA chief executive officer (CEO) and cite a lack of meaningful engagement from the airline’s management to address their demands.
PIA administration, however, said operational disruptions would not be tolerated, adding that contingency plans were in place to minimise passenger inconvenience. A spokesperson reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to maintaining scheduled flights despite the protest.
According to officials, the CEO has issued strict warnings invoking the Essential Services Act, cautioning that employees violating the law could face disciplinary or legal action. Management maintains that the protest “has no legal standing” and alleges that it aims to obstruct the airline’s privatisation process.
