Autumn festival concludes in Kalash valley

CHITRAL: The centuries-old traditional autumn festival of the Kalash tribe, known as Phoo concluded with cultural and colourful activities in Birir in Kalash valley in Lower Chitral district on Wednesday.

A large number of people from Birir, Rambur and Bamburet valleys as well as domestic and foreign tourists participated in the festival and enjoyed the unique ancient traditions of the Kalash community.

The festival was organised by the Kalash valleys Development Authority (KVDA).Deputy Commissioner Chitral Rao Hashim Azeem was the chief guest at the event, while KVDA Director General Minhasuddin, Additional Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Isa Khan and Chitral Tourism Association Chairman Syed Harir Shah were also in attendance. With the beat of drum, the festival began as people held hands in a circle and expressed unity and joy through traditional Kalash dance. Young Kalash women wearing beautifully embroidered traditional dresses were the centre of attraction for visitors. The bright sunshine and pleasant weather added colours to the festival.

Young boys and girls wore new traditional outfits specially prepared for the Phoo festival. The colourful embroidery and beadwork, particularly on the girls’ dresses, were praised by the tourists. Phoo is the festival of harvest and livestock, which is exclusively celebrated in Birir valley. The festival marks the safe return of livestock from high summer pastures, the harvest of fruits and crops, especially walnuts and grapes.On this occasion, walnuts and grapes are harvested and stored for winter. They are also served to guests as part of Kalash hospitality and distributed among relatives.
