Water level starts receding in Kabul river at Nowshera
NOWSHERA: Following heavy rains in the upper regions and a cloudburst in parts of Malakand Division and Bajaur, the water level in the Kabul River at Nowshera rose sharply on Saturday before beginning to recede later in the day.
Rescue 1122 teams evacuated around 40 stranded people and a large number of livestock to safer locations from various affected spots.
According to the Irrigation Department, at 10am on Friday, the water flow at Nowshera had surged to 120,000 cusecs, but gradually started to decrease and was recorded at 90,000 cusecs on Friday night.
District administration officials said that floodwaters did not enter residential areas due to the protective embankments along the River Kabul at Nowshera. The river has a storage capacity of up to 260,000 cusecs.
Deputy Commissioner Nowshera Irfanullah Mehsud said that no loss of life or property had been reported so far. He added that all concerned departments remained on high alert with district administration teams continuously monitoring the situation along the riverbanks.
