SHO among four suspects remanded in police custody for ‘murdering youth at police station’
A judicial magistrate on Tuesday remanded four suspects, including a station house officer, in police custody until August 8for interrogation about the killing of a young man at the premises of a police station a day earlier.
The investigating officer produced SHO Saddurddin Mirani, ASI Saleem Mughal, Atif and Shahzeb before the judicial magistrate (Malir) and sought their physical remand for questioning. The magistrate remanded the suspects in police custody until August 8 with a direction to the IO to produce them on the completion of their physical remand.
The SHO and Head Muhrir of the Shah Latif police station were among four suspects who were arrested following the killing of a young man, Maaz, within the premises of the police station. According to police sources, Atif and Shahzaib, operatives of Shah Latif SHO Sadaruddin Mirani’s alleged self-created special unit, abducted Maaz and brought him to the police station. The victim was taken to a torture cell located in front of the mosque inside the station, where he was falsely accused of being a dacoit and subjected to brutal torture. During an exchange of words between Maaz and SHO Mirani’s men, and in a fit of rage, Atif opened fire, killing him on the spot. There were reports that another young man was also brought with the victim to the police station by the SHO’s special party, but the second youth managed to escape amid the chaos. Both Atif and Shahzaib are said to be associated with PQR (Police Qaumi Razakars).
Following the incident, instead of upholding justice, SHO Mirani allegedly tried to stage the murder as a police encounter, labelling Maaz as a dacoit. He reportedly misled senior officers, tampered with the crime scene by washing away evidence, and had CCTV footage from inside the station deleted to cover up the crime.
Police sources further revealed that Head Muhrir Saleem Mughal played a key role in concealing the incident and obstructing justice. The situation took a turn when newly appointed Malir SSP Abdul Khaliq Pirzada visited the Shah Latif Town police station and inquired about the incident.
SSP Pirzada ordered the immediate registration of a case not only against the killers Atif and Shahzaib but also against their facilitators SHO Mirani and Head Muhrir Saleem Mughal. An FIR has been registered. All suspects were taken into custody.
