Hockey team training camps planned
KARACHI: The Pakistan hockey team will organise short training camps after the 10th of Muharram to improve players’ skills and address shortcomings observed during the recently concluded FIH Men’s Nations Cup in Malaysia. These camps are part of preparations for upcoming international competitions, The News has learnt.
Informed sources within the team management told The News that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) directed the national hockey team management to maintain the momentum seen in the Nations Cup by keeping the players engaged in skill-building programs. The aim is to ensure that the players remain fit, motivated, and technically sharp, especially with events like the Asia Cup 2025 approaching. Officials expressed concerns that players could become dull, lazy, or overweight if left idle between international assignments or domestic competitions.
The PHF has agreed to the proposal and allowed the national team management to plan short training camps and skill-specialization programs. According to team management sources, the camps will focus on addressing weaknesses exposed during the Nations Cup—particularly in defense and goalkeeping. Players will also undergo specialized skill training to enhance their individual strengths.
The final plan for these camps will be approved after the 10th of Muharram, with an official schedule expected to be announced by mid-July. Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad are being considered as possible venues, depending on weather conditions and logistical feasibility.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that the PHF is awaiting a final response from New Zealand regarding their participation in the FIH Pro League 2025. Regardless of New Zealand’s decision, the PHF is actively working to secure the funds required for Pakistan’s participation in the prestigious tournament.
Officials emphasized that if New Zealand opts out, PHF will make every possible effort to ensure Pakistan’s inclusion. The federation has already begun the process of arranging the estimated $2.5 million required for participation.
