Zoo of shame

Karachi Zoo, once considered a source of joy and an educational experience for children and families, has now become a symbol of neglect, mismanagement and shame. A visit to Karachi Zoo today reveals a dismal scene: the premises are littered with garbage and an unbearable stench fills the air. Cleanliness and maintenance appear to be completely absent. The cages are in a deplorable condition and the animals within them seem weak, malnourished and unattended. Many show signs of illness and distress, suggesting that they are neither provided with proper food nor medical care. Their miserable condition raises serious concerns about animal rights and welfare.

The zoo, instead of being a place of learning and recreation, leaves visitors with a heavy heart and a bad impression. Tourists and locals alike leave in disappointment, questioning the city’s ability to maintain such a basic civic facility. It is essential that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) take immediate action to improve the conditions at the zoo. Proper feeding, veterinary care, cleanliness and staff training are necessary. If the management cannot ensure these basic standards, it would be better to temporarily close the facility and seek expert help to rehabilitate the animals.
