Efforts urged to ensure peaceful Muharram
KALAYA: In a show of unity and resolve, security forces, police, civil administration, and local community leaders on Saturday vowed to ensure a peaceful Muharram across Kohat Division, particularly in Lower Orakzai amid concerns over possible sectarian unrest instigated by external elements.
Addressing the Orakzai Qaumi Aman Jirga held at the Kalaya Headquarters, Commissioner Kohat Division Muatasim Billah Shah, RPO Kohat Abbas Majeed Marwat, Orakzai Scouts Commandant Col Syed Saadat Hassan, DC Irfanuddin, and DPO Shaukat Ali emphasized that maintaining law and order was a shared responsibility.
The jirga was attended by Shia and Sunni elders, religious scholars, tribal leaders, and community members, reflecting a broad-based consensus against sectarianism.
"We are not divided by sects. We are one nation and must teach our children the values of unity and solidarity," said Commissioner Muatasim Billah.Officials warned that "third force" was attempting to use social media to misguide youth and sow discord. "It is essential we use social media responsibly and counter hate with dialogue and understanding," RPO Abbas Majeed Marwat urged.
The other speakers highlighted the imposition of Section 144 to maintain public order and prevent gatherings that could lead to unrest. "Our armed forces, police, and law enforcement agencies have been engaged in a long and courageous battle against terrorism.
Their sacrifices will not be undermined," said Colonel Saadat Hassan.Referring to the recent tensions in Kurram, officials appreciated both sides for playing a constructive role at the national level and reaffirmed commitment to peace through dialogue and collaboration. The local elders, while addressing the jirga, stated that peace remained their foremost priority. The jirga resolved to keep a close watch on miscreants and to support security personnel in their efforts.
