72nd birth anniversary: Bilawal vows to uphold Benazir’s legacy of democracy, justice
Bilawal urges nation to stand against injustice and extremism
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari paid a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, on her 72nd birth anniversary, hailing her as an eternal symbol of courage, democracy, and hope for the nation.
In a statement marking the occasion, Bilawal described Benazir not just as a leader, but as the embodiment of a movement for justice and equality. “She was a fearless voice for the voiceless, a tireless champion of the people, and a Daughter of the East whose heartbeat resonated in every corner of Pakistan,” he said.
He highlighted her lifelong struggle for a democratic, inclusive, and progressive Pakistan—one rooted in women’s empowerment, minority rights, and social justice. “She broke the chains of fear and silenced tyranny with the power of her principles,” he remarked.
Calling on the youth to be inspired by her legacy, Bilawal urged the nation to stand against injustice and extremism. “Though she is no longer with us, her courage, ideals, and love for Pakistan remain immortal,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to her mission, Bilawal vowed to carry forward the vision she stood for. “We are the custodians of her dream. We will not rest until every child is in school, every woman is empowered, every citizen is equal, and the Constitution reigns supreme,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, PPP Vice President and Senate Parliamentary Leader Sherry Rehman paid a moving tribute to Benazir Bhutto on her 72nd birth anniversary, celebrating her as a global symbol of democracy and women’s empowerment.
“On her birthday, we honour one of Pakistan’s finest leaders,” said Sherry. “Benazir Bhutto’s courage, vision, and sacrifices continue to inspire millions—especially the marginalised, the voiceless, and women who still walk the path she carved.”
Sherry highlighted Benazir’s resilience in the face of grave threats, recalling how she led from the front during a politically volatile and dangerous era. “She knew the risks but chose struggle over safety—for Pakistan, and especially for its women,” she said.
Underscoring that Benazir Bhutto’s political journey was one of purposeful resistance rather than privilege, Sherry noted her refusal to abandon her mission even when offered freedom in exchange. “That is what true leadership looks like,” she remarked.
Senator Sherry credited Benazir with institutionalising reforms that uplifted millions. She cited the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the Lady Health Worker Programme as enduring legacies of Benazir Bhutto’s vision for inclusive development. “She turned intent into institutional change,” Sherry said.
