Capacity of six nuclear plants at two sites rises to 3,530MW
CNPGS near Mianwali comprises four units (C-1, C-2, C-3 & C-4) with total capacity of 1,330 MWs
ISLAMABAD: In Pakistan, six nuclear power plants (NPPs) are operating at two different sites with a total installed capacity of 3,530 MWs, says the Economic Survey 2024-25.
Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS) near Mianwali comprises four units (C-1, C-2, C-3 & C-4) with a total capacity of 1,330 MWs.
Karachi Nuclear Power Station (KNPGS) has a total capacity of 2,200 MWs and is located on the Karachi coast. This station contains two units (K-2 & K-3) of the latest technology, termed generation-III technology.
KANUPP, the country’s first nuclear power plant with a capacity of 137 MWs, was permanently shut down in August 2021 after 50 years of operation and is in the decommissioning phase. Currently, the overall average tariff of Pakistan’s NPPs contains a notable share of the debt repayment associated with the newly constructed units. This debt repayment period constitutes only 20 percent (12 years) of the NPPs’ economic life.
