ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of the death of a second-year BDS student at Frontier Medical College, Abbottabad, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Friday directed the college administration to submit a comprehensive report within seven days.
PMDC’s swift move follows the death of Abuzar Ghafari, a promising young dental student, who allegedly died after failing to receive timely medical assistance during a medical emergency at Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad.
In an official statement, PMDC President Prof Rizwan Taj expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Mr. Ghafari, describing him as a “bright and aspiring individual who would have made significant contributions to the medical profession.”
Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends, he said, “Medical and dental students are the cream of our nation. It is our foremost duty to not only impart education but also guarantee their safety and timely care during emergencies.”
He noted that the incident “raises serious questions” about the institution’s preparedness to handle medical emergencies among its own students.
Failure to comply with directive could result in punitive measures, including penalties, revocation of recognition, under the PM&DC Act and relevant regulations.
Furthermore, in a broader move to safeguard student welfare across the country, the council has instructed all medical and dental colleges nationwide to urgently review and strengthen their health and safety protocols.
