PESHAWAR: Zinc deficiency is an underdiagnosed yet widespread health challenge in Pakistan, warned Dr Nicola Mary Lowe, Professor of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire, UK, during a seminar hosted by Rehman Medical College.

In her detailed presentation, Dr Nicola shed light not only on the serious health implications of zinc deficiency-such as stunted growth, weakened immunity, and poor maternal and child health-but also on the significant challenges faced in its identification and diagnosis.

“Unlike other micronutrient deficiencies, zinc deficiency cannot be easily detected through standard clinical assessments or routine lab tests,” she explained. “This makes it a silent burden, often going unnoticed until the health consequences become severe.”

She called for increased investment in research to develop reliable diagnostic tools and urged the integration of zinc supplementation and food fortification into public health programs.Drawing from international best practices, Dr Nicola also proposed context-specific interventions that could be effective in Pakistan, where dietary patterns and access to fortified foods vary across regions.

The seminar concluded with remarks from Professor Dr Mukhtiar Zaman, Principal - Rehman Medical College, who thanked Dr Nicola for her valuable insights. He also appreciated the Department of Community Medicine and Public Health for organizing the awareness session.

“This academic collaboration highlights the importance of evidence-based approaches in addressing nutritional challenges in Pakistan,” Dr Zaman noted, encouraging continued dialogue and action on the issue.
