LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the relevant authorities to launch a mega tourism initiative, “Magnificent Punjab,” aimed at transforming the province into a regional and international hub for history, culture, and tourism.

She has also instructed officials to take a historic step by developing 170 heritage sites across Punjab into world-class tourist destinations. The mapping of these sites, including 101 gurdwaras and 53 churches, has already been completed.

The chief minister’s vision has taken shape after five months of dedicated efforts under the leadership of Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, who, in her official capacity, approved the proposed projects.

The CM has also directed the formation of the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority, and a formal summary has been sent to the cabinet for approval. Once established, the authority will oversee all institutions related to history, heritage, and tourism. Additionally, she has instructed officials to implement, for the first time, the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority Act 2024 to ensure the project’s long-term success. The province’s first comprehensive tourism policy has also been formulated.

As part of the Annual Development Plan, the chief minister has approved a phased restoration of Punjab’s historical sites and has directed officials to begin the tendering process in July. The first phase is expected to be completed by June, with the remaining sites restored in the second and third phases. Furthermore, she has ordered the immediate preparation of PC-I for 16 tourism projects, including Bansara Gali, Tourist Village, and recreational parks.

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced plans to transform Taxila into an international “tourist city” and develop Chhanga Manga into a modern entertainment hub modelled after Switzerland.

She has also directed the modernisation of the Taxila Museum, including the establishment of display centres using advanced technology.

To accommodate Buddhist pilgrims, the construction of worship spaces and a new “Siddhartha Gallery” at the museum has been approved.

Additionally, the restoration of 46 inactive gurdwaras has been ordered to attract Sikh tourists.

The chief minister emphasised the protection of religious and historical sites of minority communities.

She highlighted efforts to enhance infrastructure, road networks, and tourism facilities, stating:

A sum of Rs 400 million has been allocated for the “Dilkush Lahore” project, which aims to preserve the historical significance of Mall Road.

For the first time, Punjab has been divided into nine tourism zones based on its historical and cultural sites. The newly designated “Tourist Trails” will include:

Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji Trail, Cultural District Mall Road, Lahore, Walled City, Lahore, Gujranwala, Aimanabad and Sikh heritage sites in Lahore, Mughal monuments along GT Road, Salt Range, Bhati Gate and Taxali Gate.

Maryam Nawaz also announced that a safari train will operate along the tourist trails, providing transport services for visitors. Tourists arriving through the private sector will be offered special discounts.

The 17th-century Hiran Minar will undergo an extensive renovation, and the Blue Dome will be expanded. Rs 240 million has been approved to modernise the 131-year-old Lahore Museum.

With support from UNESCO, efforts are underway to preserve Punjab’s thousand-year-old history and promote its cultural heritage through digital storytelling.

The Qasim Bagh Fort restoration project has reached the final tendering stage, with funds now released.

A footpath for visitors will be constructed in Uch Sharif to enhance accessibility.

A digital app has been developed to provide tourists with real-time information, guidance, and services directly on their mobile phones.

“This initiative will help make Punjab a premier tourism destination, revitalizing the province’s tourism sector,” the chief minister said.

She emphasised Punjab’s rich multi-religious and multicultural heritage, adding:

“Punjab, known as the breadbasket of the subcontinent, is also a spiritual sanctuary for followers of various religions.”

The chief minister stressed that promoting tourism will play a key role in economic development, enhancing the global image of Punjab and Pakistan:

She also extended her appreciation to her team.

Meanwhile, the sister of Chief Protocol Officer Ansar Nazir passed away, and her funeral prayers were offered at Jamia Masjid Zainab, Engineer Town, Defence Road.

A large number of government officials and relatives attended the funeral, while staff at the CM Office expressed deep sorrow and condolences.

Additionally, CM Maryam Nawaz expressed profound grief over the loss of lives in a traffic accident near the Kasur-Raiwind road. She extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families.
