Beyond neglect
This refers to the letter ‘No country for the arts’ (February 20, 2025), highlighting the challenges faced by theatre and the arts in our society. While I understand the concerns raised, I must respectfully disagree with the notion that theatre is entirely overlooked and undervalued. Theatre has been an essential part of our cultural heritage and continues to hold significance despite the evolving landscape of entertainment. While it is true that science and technology receive substantial support, it does not mean that the arts are entirely neglected. Various cultural initiatives, festivals, and independent theatre groups actively contribute to keeping the tradition alive. The perseverance of artists and their dedication to storytelling through theatre remains commendable, and their work continues to inspire audiences.
Regarding societal perception, while some people may undervalue the arts, there is a growing appreciation for theatre as a form of cultural expression and education. Many institutions, both private and public, are gradually recognising the importance of integrating the arts into educational curriculums. The growth of digital media has also created new opportunities for theatre practitioners to reach broader audiences and experiment with different storytelling techniques.
