Pakistan, WB discuss climate action for sustainable future
Islamabad:Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Romina Khurshid Alam, held a high-level meeting with Valerie Hickey, Global Director for Climate Change at the World Bank, to explore collaborative strategies for advancing Pakistan’s climate resilience and sustainability agenda.
The discussions on strengthening Climate Action focused deepening partnerships with international organisations like the World Bank to enhance climate finance, technology transfer and capacity-building — key elements in achieving Pakistan’s ambitious climate goals under the Paris Agreement and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Ms Romina emphasised the urgent need for increased financial and technical support to accelerate Pakistan’s transition towards climate resilience particularly in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and disaster risk management. She highlighted the government’s commitment to green development initiatives and stressed the importance of leveraging global expertise and resources to build a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy.
Ms Hickey reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s climate agenda, recognising the country’s vulnerability to climate change and the need for enhanced mitigation and adaptation efforts. She emphasised the Bank’s role in facilitating climate-smart investments, innovative financing solution, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to help Pakistan navigate its climate challenges effectively.
She also acknowledged and appreciated the leadership of Ms Romina in strengthening Pakistan’s climate agenda and advocating it at the global level. Her role in amplifying Pakistan’s climate priorities on international platforms was recognised as instrumental in mobilising support for the country’s climate resilience efforts, said Ms Hickey.
