KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has successfully increased natural gas production at its Shahdad X-1 well in the Gambat South Block, located in District Sanghar, Sindh.
The company, a key supplier of natural gas in the country, announced in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday that a successful water shut-off operation had significantly enhanced gas flow.
Production from the well has surged from 2.2 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to 8.4 mmscfd, while water production has been significantly reduced from 3,000 barrels per day (bpd) to just 26 bpd.
The Shahdad X-1 well, drilled in 2012 and operational since 2015, initially produced 26 mmscfd of gas. However, production had declined significantly due to severe water production, as confirmed by a production logging tool (PLT) survey in August 2024.
To address this issue, PPL collaborated with a coiled tubing service provider and successfully implemented a targeted solution using acid-soluble cement to isolate the water-producing zones.
This milestone represents the first water shut-off operation in the Gambat South Block and the debut use of acid-soluble cement technology in PPL’s portfolio. The company highlighted the success as a testament to its technical expertise and commitment to enhancing production from mature fields.
PPL operates the Gambat South Block with a 65 per cent working interest, while Government Holdings Private Limited and Asia Resources Oil Limited hold 25 per cent and 10 per cent working interests, respectively. Earlier this month, PPL commenced gas production from the Takri-1 exploration well located in the Jamshoro district of Sindh.
