Imran committed to a strong judiciary: counsel
Ex-PM accuses govt of undermining judicial independence and creating system designed to crush PTI
RAWALPINDI: PTI founder Imran Khan’s legal counsel Faisal Chaudhry Advocate Tuesday said his client had criticised the impact of 26th Amendment, saying it had distorted the judiciary’s structure and compromised the system of transparent justice.
Speaking to the media outside the Adiala Jail, he shared the details of his meeting with the former prime minister, during which various critical issues were discussed.
Imran reaffirmed his commitment to a strong and independent judiciary, asserting that incidents like May 9 and November 26 could have been avoided had the courts been independent.
He accused the government of undermining judicial independence and creating a system designed to crush PTI and suppress the opposition.
Imran expressed optimism that “despite challenges, the darkness of this night will soon end with the dawn of justice.”
He also highlighted his wife’s plight, calling her a victim of the judiciary’s “oppressive system”, and vowed to continue his struggle for judicial independence and supremacy of the law.
Faisal disclosed that Imran Khan had instructed Ali Amin Gandapur and Salman Akram to write letters addressing the judiciary’s refusal to hear the human rights petitions and respond to the allegations raised in the apex committee.
The PTI founder also voiced support for the notes written by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Ayesha, signaling a broader campaign for judicial independence through the bar associations nationwide.
Faisal referenced a report on the missing PTI workers prepared by Advocate Qazi Anwar, announcing that it would be made public soon.
He claimed the government was compelled to produce the persons who had been forcibly disappeared due to persistent legal efforts and comprehensive lists submitted by the PTI.
Jail sources confirmed that Imran had met with his sisters, Aleema Khan and Noreen Khan, along with a close relative, Nosherwan Khan Burki, in the jail’s conference room. The discussion included plans to file an appeal against his conviction in the £190 million reference case.
Later, a team of lawyers, including Qazi Anwar, Faisal Chaudhry, Ali Ijaz Butter, Pervez Iqbal, and Rai Salman Kharl, met the PTI founder.
Faisal said Bushra Bibi was not allowed to meet him, prompting plans to file a petition against this restriction.
He criticised the jail authorities, alleging their move was an attempt to pressure the PTI leader.
Faisal clarified that Imran Khan did not discuss Donald Trump during the meeting, though he congratulated him on his victory in the US presidential race.
Faisal also noted that the previous US administration had declined to act on Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s petition.
The PTI legal team continues its efforts to challenge the conviction and advocate judicial reforms, vowing to uphold the principles of justice and transparency, Faisal said.
