France offers help for Pak Green Transport initiatives
ISLAMABAD: France is offering assistance for energy initiatives in Pakistan. Federal Minister for Power, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, proposed using France’s Green Fund to support the transition of small vehicles to electric technology during a meeting with French Ambassador Nicolas Galey.
The minister emphasised that Pakistan’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy aims to achieve significant fuel savings, protect the environment, reduce transportation costs, and ease the burden on the public.
The French Ambassador appreciated Pakistan’s effective negotiations and amicable review of agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in the power sector. Minister Leghari reiterated that negotiations with 28 IPPs will result in a national saving of Rs1.4 trillion.
The government is also planning to introduce a Wheeling Policy for electricity transmission and distribution to ensure efficient distribution of surplus power. Additionally, plans are being made for the auction of additional electricity to promote a competitive environment in the power sector. The government has hired independent boards for most distribution companies to improve recovery rates and reduce line losses. The promotion of solar energy is also a priority.
Leghari stressed that all reforms are being implemented transparently to create substantial investment opportunities in the power sector. He noted Pakistan’s progress in renewable energy and green energy projects.
The French Ambassador expressed willingness to provide technical and financial assistance for Pakistan’s EV initiatives and energy reforms, acknowledging that the reform initiatives taken by Pakistan will yield positive results.Both sides agreed to further strengthen the power sector and support sustainable initiatives in Pakistan’s power sector.
