The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association’s (Fapuasa) Sindh chapter has called for holding protests, observing a black day and convening a general body meeting against government policies. The Fapuasa Sindh president and general secretary urged all members to hold press conferences and protest rallies at their respective universities.
This move comes in response to the government’s efforts to allow bureaucrats to assume university vice chancellor positions, and its continued support for non-permanent faculty appointments, which are detrimental to the autonomy and academic standards of higher education institutions.
The leadership of all Fapuasa Sindh member associations have been asked to attend the general body meeting scheduled for Thursday at the NED University, Karachi.
A press conference will also be held the same day in the city to announce the complete boycott of academic activities at all public universities of the province.
Fapuasa’s measure is aimed at registering its protest against the allegedly anti-education policies that undermine the dignity of academia and disregard the essential role of permanent faculty members in shaping the future of higher education.
According to Fapuasa, Sindh’s academic community stands united in rejecting any attempt to politicise or bureaucratise the leadership of universities. Fapuasa asked the government to immediately withdraw such decisions.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding academic freedom, meritocracy and the sanctity of higher education institutions.
