FBR director-general stresses need for track and trace system
KARACHI: Director General of FBR’s Reforms and Automation Imran Mahmand emphasised the need for a track and trace solution in the oil sector, similar to those already implemented in other industries.
Speaking on Thursday, Mahmand revealed that FBR and customs authorities have ramped up efforts against smuggling and illegal trade by utilising advanced technologies. Recently, over 1,200 illegal fuel pumps were shut down as part of these efforts.
He also stressed the importance of strict enforcement, which includes penalties of up to Rs10 million and the seizure of illicit products for those involved in illegal activities.Mahmand made these remarks at a workshop organised by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra), which focused on the implementation of effective track and trace technology.
The event, conducted in collaboration with the FBR, brought together leading solution providers from across the country to present potential digital solutions for the sector. The DG urged oil marketing companies (OMCs) to collaborate with Ogra to identify appropriate technologies, such as RFID and automated tank gauging systems (ATGs), and to propose practical timelines and cost-effective solutions for deploying these systems on tankers and at petrol pumps.
“The country is facing challenging times, and we must work together to implement a system that prevents smuggling and illegal activities, safeguarding both industry interests and national priorities,” he said.Chairman of Ogra Masroor Khan highlighted the critical role that a robust track and trace system could play in preventing financial leakages, improving accountability, and ensuring economic stability.
“A comprehensive tracking system is essential, especially during these challenging economic times, to protect the national exchequer, curb illegal activities, and strengthen the integrity of the industry,” Khan said.
