Philip Morris Pakistan exports $48m in raw tobacco over five years
LAHORE: Philip Morris Pakistan (PMPKL) has announced that it has exported raw tobacco worth $48 million over the past five years, driven by its commitment to sustainable practices.
In the first half of 2024 alone, PMPKL’s tobacco exports exceeded $15.8 million, surpassing last year’s total exports of $13.9 million. The company attributed this growth to its focus on crop diversification, social sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Head of Leaf PMPKL Abid Javed said that the company’s efforts to implement sustainable practices in its operations. These initiatives include the introduction of mechanization in tobacco farming; training farmers in alternative crops like mushrooms and kitchen gardening; and promoting social sustainability through programmes that address child labour, fair wages and working conditions.
To reduce its environmental footprint, PMPKL has invested in energy-efficient technologies, implemented waste management practices, and engaged in reforestation efforts. The company’s sustainability initiatives have contributed significantly to its export success and positive impact on local communities.
