Prof Shahid Rasool awarded honorary degree by Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh
The executive director of Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Prof Dr Shahid Rasool, has been awarded an honorary degree by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
This prestigious recognition was granted in acknowledgment of his remarkable contributions to the field of surgery in Pakistan.
Prof Rasool, known for his expertise in robotic surgery and his leadership at Sindh’s largest public sector hospital, is now among the select few Pakistani medical professionals to be honoured by the renowned British institution.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, founded in 1505, is one of the world’s oldest medical institutions. It has played a critical role in advancing surgical practice globally, awarding honorary degrees only to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field. Over the centuries, only a handful of professionals worldwide have received this distinction, highlighting the magnitude of Prof Rasool’s achievement.
The degree marks a further accomplishment in Prof Rasool’s illustrious career. Previously, he earned his first degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow. In a rare feat, he now holds distinctions from both Royal Colleges in Scotland.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah congratulated Prof Rasool, calling him “an asset to Sindh and Pakistan,” adding that his international recognition brings pride not only to the province but to the entire country.
Under Prof Rasool’s leadership, the JPMC has witnessed significant advancements in medical technology and surgery. He has spearheaded robotic surgeries at the hospital and trained numerous doctors in this cutting-edge technique.
