ISLAMABAD: As many as 50 percent of Pakistanis consider government actions insufficient to deal with the negative effects of climate change, but surprisingly, refuse to take any action at the individual level themselves.
This was found in a Gallup Pakistan survey, in which 1,000 people participated. This survey was conducted between January 3 and January 17, 2024.
In the survey, 50 percent of Pakistanis demanded more steps from the government to prevent climate change, while 43 percent said the government’s steps were sufficient and appreciated them while 7 percent refrained from giving any opinion on this question.
On the question if they want to work to prevent climate change, 42 percent refused to take any action on their own and 19 percent favoured recycling, 18 percent favoured abandoning vehicles and 7 percent favoured leaving meat consumption, 7 percent supported purchasing organic items, 7 percent supported leaving traveling by plane, and 6 percent supported preventing fast-changing fashion.
There is a great difference if Pakistanis are compared with the world public opinion. At global level, 64 percent named recycling as their first priority for tackling climate change while 29 percent termed avoiding fast-changing fashion and 22 percent purchasing organic items their third priority. As many as 18 percent said not to use a car and 17 percent supported not to travel by plane, while 12 percent supported giving up consumption of meat.
