An e-taxi driver allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the sea at the Clifton beach on Tuesday. The man was identified as Tahir Mehmood, 27. His body is yet to be found.
His father Muhammad Mehmood told the media that the information of the incident was given to him by Tahir’s wife over the phone in the early hours. Tahir had told his family about what he intended to do over a video call. He had two marriages and had two daughters, one of whom had passed away two months ago.
Raza Farooq of the Edhi Maritime Services said they started looking for the body early in the morning, adding that there have been difficulties in their search due to bad weather. Police said Tahir hailed from Rahim Yar Khan, while in Karachi he lived in Shah Faisal Colony, adding that his car was found near Sea View but the search for his body is still under way.
His wife told the police that she saw him crying over the video call, and that he said he was at Sea View and they needed to come there immediately. “I am committing suicide, and you all be happy,” she quoted him as saying.
Farooq told the media that around 4am they received information that someone had committed suicide at sea. “Our team reached Sea View. There were strong waves and winds in the sea. We searched Sea View and its surroundings but found nothing.”
He said that if the young man has committed suicide, his body might be stuck at the bottom. “When the body will sweep up to the shore, it will be found.” He pointed out that the search operation faced difficulties due to strong waves and winds, which was why their team could not return to Sea View after going into the sea.
