ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan Saturday said that as per the party’s founding chairman Imran Khan’s decision, Senator Ali Zafar has been named as the leader of the opposition in the Senate while Aun Abbas as parliamentary leader in the Upper House of Parliament.

Replying to a question during his media talk in Rawalpindi, Gohar said that there should be no election of the Senate chairman and deputy chairman, as the electoral college was incomplete without the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He insisted that prior to chairman and deputy chairman’s elections, polls must be held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa so that senators could make their way to the House first.

He complained that his party was discriminated against in relation to Senate elections. He recalled that they had already demanded that since the electoral college was incomplete, election to the slots of chief minister, NA speaker, deputy speaker and prime minister should not be held.

The PTI leader said that his party was prepared to play the role of an opposition party in the National Assembly provided the unconstitutional and illegal actions were halted against the party candidates, turning their majority into minority.

“This trend of defeating our successful candidates will only deteriorate things and balance in the parliament will be disturbed,” he cautioned.

He demanded of the Election Commission of Pakistan to stop recounting to show his party candidates as defeated, alleging the electoral body had failed to perform its constitutional duty.
