ISLAMABAD: Two members-elect of the Senate belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) have emerged as the potential contenders for the slot of deputy chairman Senate.
The contenders are Ms. Anusha Rehman Ahmad Khan and Ms. Rahat Jamali. The party would take the decision tomorrow (Sunday).
Ms. Anusha is from Lahore and Ms. Rahat Jamali from Jaffarabad district of Balochistan.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Senator Azam Nazir Tarar has made it clear that the decision of the KP government and the KP Assembly speaker to block the oath-taking of successful members of the upper house of parliament on the special seats was none else’s fault but of the government and KP Assembly speaker.
The sitting of the Senate and election of its chairman and deputy chairman could not be delayed/stopped due to this reason.
Foreign Minister and Senator-elect Ishaq Dar will supervise the election of Senate chairman after oath-taking of the members including himself. Dar has been detailed by the government with the formal approval of the president. He will conduct the proceedings of the Senate on its first day and administer oath to 52 members. Meanwhile, parliamentary sources told The News on Friday that former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had been assured of the JUI-F support when he met with Fazlur Rehman.
