Three Sindh MPAs take oath on eve of Senate polls

Three MPAs-elect, one from the treasury benches and two from the opposition, took the oath of office in the Sindh Assembly session on Monday on the eve of the Senate elections.

Sindh Assembly Speaker Awais Qadir Shah administered the oath to Zubair Ahmed Junejo belonging to the Pakistan Peoples Party, and two women lawmakers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Fouzia Hameed and Mussarat Jabeen.

The PPP’s newly-sworn MPA represent the constituency PS-80 Dadu. Earlier, the session of the provincial assembly started after a delay of one hour and 45 minutes than the scheduled time.

Speaking on a point of order, Sindh Minister for Agriculture and Sports Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar said peace should be restored in the province. He said the provincial government had posted efficient officials who were capable of delivering with the aim of restoring peace in Sindh in the shortest possible time. He said that influential tribal chiefs should contribute to the cause of restoring peace.

“We are under an obligation to work most on the issue of the law and order,” he said. Later, the speaker announced that the House was being handed over to the Election Commission of Pakistan for its conversion into the polling station for elections for 12 vacant seats inthe Senate of Pakistan from Sindh. The Senate polls would be held on Tuesday (today). Later, the session was prorogued.

Opposition leader

Meanwhile, an application was submitted to the Sindh Assembly secretariat for nominating an MPA belonging to the MQM-P, Ali Khursheedi, as the new leader of the opposition in the House.

The application carried the signatures of the MQM-P’s lawmakers. The lone MPA belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami and legislators belonging to the Sunni Ittehad Council on the opposition benches did not sign the application.
