Pakistan team endures rigorous fitness camp in Kakul
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated an intensive fitness camp at the Army School of Physical Training (ASPT) in Kakul, Abbottabad, to prepare the national cricket team for upcoming bilateral series and the ICC T20 World Cup. The camp, conducted in collaboration with the Pakistan Army, aims to enhance the players’ physical and mental strength while focusing on team building and overall performance improvement.
The camp, attended by 29 players including stalwarts like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Azam Khan, commenced on March 26 and is scheduled to conclude on April 8. Under the supervision of experienced trainers and coaches, the players are undergoing a comprehensive training regime designed to elevate their fitness levels, agility, leadership, and strategic thinking.
Photos shared by the PCB depict players engaging in various rigorous drills and gym exercises, indicating the intensity and dedication with which they are approaching the camp. The camp’s strategic focus aligns with Pakistan’s upcoming cricket schedule, which includes a home T20I series against New Zealand, away series against Ireland and England, and the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.
However, the fitness camp hasn’t been without its challenges. During the second day of training, some players faced difficulties during the prescribed fitness evaluation, particularly in completing the two-kilometer run. Notably, Azam Khan encountered challenges, managing only one and a half kilometers before stopping, highlighting the need for improvement in his endurance and fitness levels.
Despite some struggles, several players showcased impressive performances during the fitness tests. Mohammad Rizwan led the pack, completing the run in 8 minutes and 26 seconds, followed closely by Irfanullah Khan Niazi, who finished in 6 minutes and 47 seconds.
However, concerns arose as Imad Wasim was unable to participate due to potential knee injury concerns, while Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf refrained from the test due to ongoing recovery from injuries sustained during the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL).
In addition to the regular players, notable inclusions in the camp are pace bowler Mohammad Amir and all-rounder Imad Wasim, who recently came out of retirement, showcasing their commitment to national team duties.
As the camp progresses, the PCB remains optimistic about the players’ preparation for the upcoming challenges, aiming to ensure they are in peak physical and mental condition to excel on the field. With a strategic focus on fitness and performance enhancement, Pakistan aims to make a strong impression in the forthcoming cricket fixtures, both domestically and on the international stage.
