ECP notifies five women MPAs elected on reserved seats

PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has notified five members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly elected on reserved seats for women while decision on 21 others is still pending.

The decision on the quota of the Sunni Ittehad Council in MPAs on reserved seats for women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has yet to be announced as the case is pending with the ECP.Now the Sunni Ittehad Council has 87 members in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed independent candidates joined the party.

As per the formula, there is one reserved seat for women per 4.08 of the general seats won by a party. A verdict in favour of the Sunni Ittehad Council will get it 21 women seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

According to the ECP, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUIF) got two each seats while Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) got one slot of the woman female MPA against the reserved seats.

As per the notification, Rehana Ismail and Asima Alam of JUIF, Sobia Shahid and Shehla Bano of PMLN and Nilofar Babar of PPP were elected MPAs on reserved seats for women.As per the statistics, the Sunni Ittehad Council has the highest number, 87, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly that has a total of 115 general seats.

The JUIF has seven seats, PMLN six, PPP four seats while Awami National Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians has one seat each. There are three independent MPAs while election is either postponed or result is pending on six seats.
