Sindh police show downward trend in crime

ISLAMABAD: The Sindh Police astonishingly managed to display the annual crime data of the last two years, showing downward trend, even, of heinous offences including kidnapping for ransom, carjacking, street crime as snatchings, burglaries and many other, the crime data indicates.

While, the people of Sindh believe the crime surge touches frightening height all over Sindh as it is

broadly accept as true that no space all over the province could be termed as tiny section of the country imagining serene, nonviolent with equanimity to inhale gulp of air.

It is extensively whispered that the police try to show ‘unnatural means of crime control’ by denying registration of first information reports (FIRs) including thefts, bike lifting, mobile snatching, even rape and molestation case. The police acknowledge that the ratio of lodging FIR is not more than10 to 20 per cent. The inhabitant of Sindh are not ready to believe in the truthiness of the annual crime data offered by the Sindh Police.

Figures of reported crime of the Sindh Police submitted to the Ministry of Interior, show 5.2% downward trend of overall reported crime - 113,250 recorded in 2023 as compared to 119,499 in 2022. Crime against person has shown slightly higher with +12.9% - 19,683 in 2023 as compare to 17,435 in 2022. While, in the section of crime against property, a huge difference of descending tendency of 19.5% - claiming 33,411 reported cases in 2023 as compared to 41,513 in 2022.

The figures of crime against person indicate 1,884 murders reported in 2023 as compared to 1,705 in 2022 with 10.5% increase, while, cases of attempted murder were shown with 27.1% hike as 2,677 cases were reported in 2023 and 2107 cases were reported in 2022. Hurt offences were reported with

5.8% increase - 2,668 cases were reported in 2023 as compared to 2,522 in 2022.

While, rioting cases were figured with 7.6% upward trend 3332 cases were reported in 2023 and 3098 in 2022. Hiking tendency in assault on public servant, was noticed with 33.3% as 4,437 cases were reported in 2023 and 3,329 in 2022. Rape incident were witnessed with 11.9% rise – 357 cases were lodged in 2023 as compared to 319 in 2022. While, gang rape incidents were shown with 17.6% descending leaning - 70 incidents of gang rape were reported in 2023 as compared to 85 in 2022.

The Sindh Police claimed decreasing trend of kidnapping/abduction cases with 1.6% as 4102 offences were reported in 2023 and 4,168 in 2022. But couldn’t display ‘controlled offences’ kidnapping for ransom incident as sharp hike of 89.3% have visible in the crime data sheet as 142 episodes of kidnapping for ransom were reported in 2023 as compared to 75 in 2022.

In the segment of ‘Crime against Property’, a frightening figure of highway dacoity could be noticed with 114.3% increase during the year 2023 as 15 cases were reported in 2023 as compared to 7 in 2022. While, petrol pump dacoities were shoot up with 150% hike as 10 cases were reported in 2023 and 4 in 2022. However, the other incident of dacoities were shown increase of 11.7% as 690 offences of dacoities were lodged with the police in 2023 and 618 in the year 2022. But, the Sindh police administration managed to show reduced figure ‘Highway Robbery’ with 43.8%, displaying 9 incidents were reported in 2023 as compared to 16 in 2022.

Bank robberies were strolled up by 66.6%, while, Petrol Pump robberies have shown equivalent as 13 offences were occurred during both years of 2022 and 2023. However, other cases of robberies

were happened with the decline 15.5% as 5107 incidents of routine or minor robberies were occurred during 2023 and 6,041 in 2022. Incidents of burglaries were displayed with minor downward trend of 0.3% as 3055 cases of burglary were reported in 2023 as compared to 3065 in 2022.

The figures claimed visible control on vehicle lifting incident with the decline of 37.5% as 17,096 vehicle were lifted during the year 2023 as compared to 27,354 cases reported in 2022.

In road accidents, 454 people were killed in 733 road mishaps during 2023 as compared to 507 in 773 accidents in 2022. The people consider that almost every individual has become victim of the street

criminals, creating terror and fear amongst the inhabitants but the police have taken such a dreading crime as a minor offence and the police authorities have entirely overlooked the most heinous crime of the society and didn’t bothered to included figures of mobile phone snatching in the annual crime data.

Mobile phone and bike snatching offences are most trendy for the street criminals, creating sense of insecurity, fear, irritation and terror among the deprived people but the police, straightaway refuse to lodge FIR to rectify them.

But the authorities responsible for providing peaceful atmosphere to the society but never took or suggested any step to counter such infuriating offence. However, the people engaged in compiling crime data, despite showing separate data of mobile phone snatching, included in the head of ‘other offences’ to hide the real figure of the touchiest offence in the society.
