SC seeks Faizabad sit-in commission’s report in a month
The court directed the commission to submit its report within a month and adjourned further hearing
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Monday sought — within one month — a report from the Inquiry Commission on the Faizabad sit-in.
A three-member bench — headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa — heard the federal government’s application, seeking more time to investigate the case.
The other members of the bench were Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Musarrat Hilali. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan told the court that the inquiry commission could not complete its work in the stipulated two months.
He informed the court that they had filed two CMAs in this regard, seeking extension in time for completing the task. The chief justice asked the attorney general as to when the commission would conclude the task to which he replied that the investigation would be completed by February 14.
The court directed the commission to submit its report within a month and adjourned further hearing. Meanwhile, the Election Commission filed its implementation report on the sit-in in pursuance of the court’s order.
The ECP representative furnished the report with the court in sealed envelopes comprising 11 volumes. The chief justice said after examining the report, an appropriate order would be passed and adjourned the hearing.
On November 15, 2023, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan had submitted before the court that the federal government had constituted a new three-member inquiry commission under the Commission of Inquiry Act 2017 for probing the sit-in adding that former IGP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Akhtar Ali Shah would be the chairman of the commission, while former IGP Tahir Alam Khan and interior ministry additional secretary Khushhal Khan would be the members.
