A trainee policeman’s mother was gunned down and he himself was wounded by a couple of suspects during an alleged attempt to rob their house in Orangi Town in the early hours of Sunday.

According to trainee police constable Asad, two unidentified suspects broke into his house in Gulshan-e-Bihar at around 4am. “Upon seeing me awaken, they told me to turn around, then they opened fire. A bullet hit me, while my mother in the adjacent room also got shot and died.”

Police said Asad’s brother and sister-in-law also live in the house. The brother explained that when he entered the room, their mother had fallen down the stairs, while he himself was also injured.

He said the perpetrators fled when he arrived, leaving behind their pistol. Asad told the police that the pistol had been kept in the cupboard inside the room. The casualties were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). The deceased was identified as Yasmin Abdur Raheem, 45. Her body was later handed over to her family.

Police said that there was only one bullet in the pistol. They said that according to their initial investigation, it is unclear if it was a robbery, but they are conducting a thorough investigation from different aspects.

Separately, Abdus Sattar, 29, son of Umer was shot in the Baloch Goth area of Orangi Town. He was taken to ASH. Police said the man was wounded after he resisted an attempt to mug him.
