District City police arrest ‘notorious gangsters’
Police sources said they were arrested in injured state after an exchange of fire. The suspects were allegedly involved in extortion.
The District City police on Saturday claimed to have arrested notorious gangsters of the Lyari gang war involved in target killing and extortion cases.
Officials said that in a major action, the Chakiwara police arrested various suspects. They were identified as Jamil, alias Chhanga, Bahadur, alias PMT and Ayaz Zehri.
Police sources said they were arrested in injured state after an exchange of fire. The suspects were allegedly involved in extortion.
Another suspect, Tanveer, alias Dada, had been arrested in another operation. He was an absconder in cases registered at the Garden and Baghdadi police stations.
According to police, the suspect was an operative of the Zubair Chhotu group. A CCTV video also showed him carrying out firing to spread fear over non-payment of extortion.
The arrested suspect along with his accomplices Salman, alias Chachi, and Shahzeb had demanded Rs300,000 from the owner of a warehouse in Musa Lane Baghdadi.
The suspects had gone to the warehouse with arms on Friday night and demanded extortion in the name of Lyari gang war commander Shiraz Comrade. They threatened that they would kill the owner if he refused to pay extortion money.
The arrested man and his accomplice Salman blackmailed the owner of the warehouse, Shakeel, using different phone numbers.
The suspects made extortion calls to various places in Lyari during the last one year and received extortion money, the details of which are as follows.
They demanded Rs200,000 from Al-Halal Bakery in Khada Market from where they eventually collected Rs80,000. They also demanded Rs300,000 as extortion money from the Benazir Bakery in Naya Nazimabad in the name of Shiraz Comrade.
A general store in Lea Market was told to pay Rs200,000. A man, Hanif, was threatened by the suspects who demanded Rs250,000 from him. He paid them Rs20,000.
