ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Housing and Works has taken a principled decision to amend the rules of allotment of government houses.

A proposal to make a modification in the Allocation Rules, 2002 is under consideration. The Rule 20 of Government House Allotment Rules is likely to be abolished. Under Rule 20, the government house allotted to a retired federal employee is allotted to their employee son or daughter.

The waiting list employees are of the view that the rule is based on injustice to transfer the government house from father to child on retirement as it deprives the right of senior employees who have been waiting for a long time. Officers and employees get their son or daughter recruited before the retirement and the house is allotted to them. The affected employees are of the view that the allotment of houses should be done only on the principle of seniority. The housing secretary had set up a committee for reforms in the rules which has recommended that the Rule 20 be scrapped.

However, an opinion will be taken from the Establishment Division and the Ministry of Law and Justice. According to sources, the Ministry of Housing has sought the opinion of Establishment Division on this proposal. After receiving this opinion, the opinion will be taken from the Ministry of Law. A final decision will be taken in this regard next week after receiving feedback.
