Learning from Japan
This refers to the letter ‘Biker’s safety’ (January 4, 2024) by Iqra Batool. The widespread non-use of helmets by bikers in Pakistan is a wake-up call for the local authorities. The letter also prompted me to highlight yet another issue specific to Pakistani motorists: their tendency to neglect the importance of fastening seat belts while driving vehicles. The substantial number of fatal traffic accidents in Pakistan clearly underscores the imperative need for the rigorous enforcement of safety protocols.
Violating traffic signals, exceeding speed limits, and incessant honking have regrettably become commonplace practices. We must take on the responsibility of being not only rule-abiding drivers but also being considerate and mindful. A valuable lesson can be drawn from Japan where the drivers have to put stickers on their cars indicating if they are beginners, senior citizens, disabled etc so that the others on the road can be more accommodating and patient. Additionally, stickered cars receive extra benefits such as designated parking spots at shopping centres.
