However, vehicles carrying essential commodities such as water, edible oil, construction material, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, medical gasses, life-saving drugs, meat, skin and other related items will be allowed to ply the city roads.

The specified routes where banned heavy vehicles are allowed to move include: the slip road from Superhighway to New Karachi Industrial Area, National Highway to Godam Chowrangi via Manzoor Petrol Pump, Younus Chowrangi, Dawood Chowrangi to 8000 Road near Jam Sadiq Bridge, Northern Bypass to Paracha Chowk, Estate Avenue and Siemens Chowrangi, and back to Gulbai Mauripur Road, Jinnah Bridge and the Karachi port.

This decision was taken on the direction of Sindh caretaker chief minister (CM) Justice (retried) Maqbool Baqar over the heavy traffic’s involvement in causing road traffic accidents and environmental pollution. Earlier, the CM had emphasized the role of authorities in safeguarding precious lives and ensuring a safer environment for all residents.

According to the commissioner’s office, this step is expected to significantly improve the traffic flow on the main arteries of the city, providing a much-needed relief to the public, as assured by the CM.

The office added that the CM’s resolution signified a pivotal moment, promising to secure invaluable lives and enhance the overall traffic dynamics to deliver relief to the populace.
