LAHORE:Under the directives of Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) CEO Babar Sahib Din, a crackdown is under way in the City on elements that are contributing to smog.

According to a fortnightly report, the Enforcement Wing of the LWMC has registered over 300 FIRs against those involved in burning waste and contributing to smog. The report said the violators have been issued 630 challans and imposed fine to the tune of more than Rs 1.2million over burning waste material. The LWMC CEO stated that actions were being taken under the Local Government Act and Section 188 to control smog.

He said the other day the LWMC Enforcement Wing authorities took action against 21 accused on charges of burning waste material in a factory located in Misri Shah. Simultaneously, the authorities detained three people in Johar Town for setting waste on fire, he maintained. LWMC spokesperson Umar Chaudhry said efforts were underway to curb elements contributing to smog actively. He emphasised that a relentless series of actions will continue against those setting waste on fire.

The LWMC CEO urged citizens to refrain from burning waste and advised them to identify individuals engaged in such activities to the helpline at 1139. LWMC Enforcement teams are operational across the city in all three shifts. The CEO said the LWMC teams are dynamically active to combat smog in all shifts throughout the city.
