MULTAN: As part of the US-funded Tahaffuz programme, the health department launched Punjab’s first Anti-Rape Crisis Cell (ARCC) at the Nishtar Medical University Hospital here on Thursday with the technical assistance of UN Women.

The ARCC reflects a collective effort to address sexual violence and empowers survivors to seek justice and healing. The facility will serve as a vital resource centre, offering a range of services to survivors, including medical and psychological support, legal aid and counselling. The ARCC will operate 24 hours round the clock with proper security.

Pakistan’s first-ever ARCC was launched with the support of United States and technical assistance of UN Women at the Karachi Police Surgeon’s Office in August last.

The establishment of this much-needed facility in Multan marks a crucial step forward in the pursuit of justice and support for survivors of sexual assault. The US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, underscored the US government’s support for the fight against sexual violence and in advocating for the protection of survivors’ rights in Pakistan.

The health minister, Dr Javed Akram, commented that the ARCC facility in Multan reflects the government’s focus on uplifting south Punjab. The establishment of this Crisis Cell is a testament to the dedication of their government and collaboration of various stakeholders in ongoing battle against sexual violence.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Donald Blome met Commissioner Multan Division Engineer Aamir Khattak and discussed initiatives for public welfare under the leadership of Chief Minister Punjab Syed Mohsin Naqvi.

Bloome said the culture of Multan is very rich and he enjoyed interacting with the people here. Commissioner Engineer Aamir Khattak presented Ambassador Blome with a shield, a souvenir and Multani Ajrak.
