‘Children need to be taught about climate change, basic life skills’

Sindh caretaker education minister Rana Hussain said on Wednesday that the contemporary challenges in literacy of the public required a holistic response which included lessons on climate change, health and nutrition as well as basic life skills.

Speaking to a consultative meeting organised by Idara-e-Taleem o Aagahi (ITA) at a hotel, the minister commented: “We need to understand our audience, emphasize multi-sectoral collaboration for effective measures, and enable societies to adapt.”

The event marked the closing ceremony for the ‘Recovery for Foundational Learning - Flood Response Sindh 2022’ programme by the ITA in collaboration with the Sindh’s School Education and Literacy Department and Foreign Development and Commonwealth Office.

ITA CEO Baela Raza Jamil underscored the necessity of creating a safe and caring learning environment, especially for children affected by climate change-induced emergencies. She said that the programme reached over 210,000 children within 11 months in floods ravaged districts across the province.

She added that the project helped 30,873 children with disabilities from minorities and vulnerable groups to improve their foundational learning skills.
