RAWALPINDI: In a daring and timely move, the police foiled a suicide attack bid near the Wah Gardens Police check post on Tuesday when cops deployed at the barrier intercepted a bus from Peshawar and forced it to stop.
They found a dubious passenger sneaking out of the bus who started moving towards the Wah Cantt.A constable noticed him and shouted at him asking him to stop but he started running, reports said and added that while running off the GT Road, he threw a hand grenade at the constable who was chasing him. It exploded at some distance from the cop who remained unhurt but kept chasing the person after realising that he was a suicide bomber.
To avoid arrest, the suicide bomber sat down, put his head between his knees and blew himself up, the report said, adding that prior to that, the terrorist kept running and blew himself up some 200 yards away from the GT Road on the eastern side.
Meanwhile, heavy contingents of police, Elite Force, Anti-Terrorist Squad and bomb disposal squad, led by top officers, reached the scene and cordoned off the area. Forensic experts collected body parts of the bomber and sent them for a DNA test.
Police sources claimed that after hurling a grenade towards the chasing cop, the terrorist whipped out another hand grenade but it exploded in his hand, causing his death on the spot. The police of the twin-cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been put on a high alert to avoid any possible act of terrorism, sources said.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has directed the police and intelligence agencies to submit daily reports to him.An intelligence report said that around 1:35pm, the police stopped a bus coming from Peshawar at Wah Garden Check Post (No6) on the GT Road and started checking passengers, adding that during the checking a young man, 21-22 years of age, apparently Pathan, sneaked out of the bus and started walking towards the Wah Cantt.
The check post was in fact set for checking narcotics smuggling. However, by nabbing a terrorist, they did a fine job and saved the sensitive area from death and destruction.APP adds: The federal minister for interior condemned the attack on a police check post in the Wah Cantt and sought an initial report of the incident.
He also announced an award for police personnel for showing bravery at the time of the incident, said a press release. The policemen who were recognised for their courage included ASI Babar, Sub-Inspector Ashraf, Head Constable Zafar Iqbal, Constable Amjad and Mukhtiar. The minister said such incidents could not weaken the courage of Jawans, and terrorists would never succeed in their nefarious designs.
