PML-N’s Sheikh Ansar elected first mayor of Islamabad: unofficial result
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won the contest for the post of mayor, as its candidate emerged victorious over that of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in today’s election for the coveted slot, according to unofficial results.
PML-N’s candidate Sheikh Ansar Aziz bagged 49 votes and elected as the first ever mayor for the capital city of Islamabad. His opponent Khurram Nawaz of PTI received 26 votes.
Earlier, the polling for the election of mayor and deputy mayors began at 9 AM and concluded at 5pm here at Jinnah Convention Centre. It was a secret ballot.
Already elected chairpersons from 50 union councils of Federal Capital along with 27 members from reserved seats were to cast their votes to elect the mayor and deputy mayors. The majority voted in favour of Sheikh Ansar of PML-N.
The vote count began immediately after the polls closed at 5 PM.
