ISLAMABAD: Additional Director General Basharat Mehmood Shehzad of the Federal Investigation Bureau (FIA) demanded for the body to have the same access to governmental records as provided to the National Accountability Bureau.
During a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior Shehzad briefed that owing to the faults in the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Act 2010, obtaining valid results was getting difficult with records not getting received on time and a delay in the course of investigation as well.
He went on to express that the FIA should also have the same access to governmental records as NAB while stating that in order to ensure this, anti-money laundering laws needed amendments.
Moreover, he complained that the FIA had to seek permission from a sessions judge in order to access bank data while NAB was authorized with the right to use data from any organization.
The director of the federal counter-intelligence body stated seeking permission from a sessions judge results in a major delay in the course of the investigation as it was not certain whether permission would be granted by the judge in the end or not.
Last month, the government had proposed amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010 which comprises of changes like clauses of the anti-money laundering law to be part of the act and the trial of all crimes to conclude within a span of six months to a year.
